How do we fix broken promises?

Brigman Law supports West Michigan families who are trying to pick up the pieces from something that has failed them. It could be a divorce decree that is a mess and the ex is not doing what he or she promised. It could be a Trustee who is not doing right by the client who is a beneficiary. It could be a child who is in a misstep with the law.  It could be a husband who will not stop driving and he has Alzheimer’s.

We are the lawyers who do not leave a job half finished. We are the lawyers who do not make a bad situation worse.

We are creative, compassionate and committed individuals. We give our clients the legal representation that we ourselves would want if we were the ones paying for it.

Our mission is to work smart, to make it happen for our clients, and to have clients that stay with us for life. Each and every time a client returns to us for something else, we know that we have done right by that client. It is exactly what we want to happen.

How do we make laws better?

We are active members and leaders on committees with the State Bar of Michigan and the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office. We update and modify laws. We revise court rules. We make court forms accurate and easy to use. Constance works with the State Bar of Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Council and with the Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Office (SCAO) Forms Committee.

Constance played a major role in getting three bills signed into Michigan law. She spent over two years working on Public Acts 155, 156 & 157 – in conjunction with Ed Rivet from Right to Life of Michigan and Michael J. Lebenbom, J.D. from the Health Care Association of Michigan. The bills were sponsored in the House of Representatives by Kevin Cotter, District 99; Andrea M. LaFontaine, District 32; and Kenneth Kurtz, District 58. She is pictured with the governor as he signed the bills into law.

This set of bills clarifies the ability of a guardian to execute a “Do Not Resuscitate” order in a variety of care settings. In doing so, it prevents a lot of confusion and stress in an already painful time when a guardian may be acting on the wishes and directions of the loved one they are appointed to represent.

What do your awards mean?

Constance has been selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers Award four years in a row (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015).  Best Lawyers is unique because inclusion in this select, competitive and limited list is based on peer review from lawyers who were previously on the list. The votes and ranking are based on questions about the lawyer’s quality and performance during the year as viewed from the eyes of others who have observed the lawyer’s work firsthand.

Brigman Law has also been selected as a Best Law Firm for the Grand Rapids, Michigan metropolitan area in the field of Trusts and Estates. This ranking is based on client evaluations, lawyer evaluations and peer review from other lawyers on the Best Lawyers list. Clients ranked us on our expertise, responsiveness, understanding, cost-effectiveness, civility, and whether they would refer someone else to us. Lawyers ranked us in the same manner but added another noteworthy criteria of whether they consider us a worthy competitor.  We especially like the last criteria since it says something about how effective we are at what we do.

our-firm-02We are not the only law firm ranked in the Grand Rapids, Michigan metropolitan area. We share the honors with 6 other law firms. There are the larger tier-1 law firms of Clark Hill PLC, Miller Johnson, PLC, Varnum LLP and Warner Norcross & Judd LLP. Also, a tier-2 law firm, Mika, Meyers Beckett & Jones and a tier-3 law firm, Law Weathers.

The AVVO award and rating is based on a lawyer’s specialized education, publication in peer-reviewed journals, speaking engagements, contributions to scholarship in one’s field, years of experience, and public and professional leadership.
